How to decorate your nursery – ideas for your little one

Whether you have an energetic toddler or a new-born, a nursery is a dynamic space – one that has to be suited to both sleeping and playtime. However, it’s also the one place in your house where you can have the most fun, so make the most of it by creating a room that will spark your little one’s imagination.

From creating a gorgeous gallery wall of fun prints to adding pops of colour, CEWE’s photo expert Clare Moreton has shared her top tips for creating a nursery that both you and your child will love.

 Spark their creativity

A little one’s room is a large part of their lives, so it’s important that it reflects their character and feels like their own space. For a stylish way to add a touch of individuality and creativity to the room, consider creating some unique wall art that reflects your child’s personality. For a little one with an artistic flair, a custom canvas will make sure their masterpiece is kept and admired for years to come. Put your children’s drawings onto canvas and they’re sure to feel proud as punch!

Create a fun gallery wall

When you have a child that loves exploring their world, you’ll find it hard to choose just one piece of art to go on the wall of their room. Make the most of this by tapping into 2019’s biggest trend – the gallery wall. Embrace the fun of the nursery environment by mixing things up – try framed photographs of your child alongside typographic art prints and artwork canvases – have a go at finger painting or hand and foot prints on canvas for a fun activity and piece of art you can treasure forever. Keep your arrangement freeform - we recommend placing your largest item first and then placing your smaller items around it for the simplest way to get the look.

Colourful pictures and prints near your changing table will also help stimulate your child’s brain while they are being changed – add in a few photos of family members and friends too so they start to recognise familiar faces

Keep decoration neutral – with pops of colour

Your child’s bedroom could have to see them through from birth until they are a few years old, so make things easier by painting the room in a neutral colour that will be easy to update. However, that doesn’t have to mean a dull, lifeless room. Use colourful toys and decorative items such as wall art or personalised cushions to add fun pops of colour to the room, or try wall stickers, that can be easily peeled off and updated as your child grows. Alternatively, a pastel colour palette is a good option to create a calming environment and encourage sleep. Try pinks, baby blues, mint greens and soft yellows to create a relaxing colour scheme that will help your nursery transition from playroom to bedroom.

Inspire them with words

Not only can word art be a great way to add décor, personality and colour into your little one’s nursery, it’s also a fantastic education tool. Whether you have their name placed pride of place above the crib, or you opt for alphabet art, word art is a creative and fun way to inject function and style into your nursery

Embrace the toys

Whilst it may be tempting to hide all your little one’s toys away in an attempt to de-clutter, opting for a few statement, or treasured items to stay out on display can make a nursery feel cosy and lived in. Choose a couple of special toys to keep out on display, be it a beloved teddy bear or a selection of fun and colourful toys.
